Lawyer to speak at COA & other events
Date of event: Thursday, May 22nd
Location: Williamsburg Town Offices
Rm. 101,
COA meal site 141 Main St. Haydenville
Attorney Jennifer Snyder will
be a guest speaker at the Williamsburg Council On Aging on
Thursday, May 22nd at 11:10 a.m. She will speak about Mass
Health, estate planning and long term care. She is speaking free of
charge. There is no need to sign up in advance unless you plan to
have a meal afterwards. To reserve a meal call 268-8407 at least 48
hours in advance. The Veterans' Agent, Steve Connor, holds office
hours once per month in the COA office, Rm. 102. This month he will
be here on Wednesday, May 28th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There may be
benefits you do not know about. If you are a veteran or if you are
related to a veteran make sure you find out what benefits you may be
eligible to receive. For instance, parents of veterans who served
during a war may be eligible for benefits. This is something people
often do not realize. Also, spouses of veterans who served during a
war (even if they were not in a war zone) should make sure they are
getting whatever benefits they are entitled to receive. There is no
need to schedule an appointment, just show up between 11 a.m. and 1
p.m. Weekly activities include: writing (waiting list), computer
class, tai chi, quilting, card club, etc. Call 413-268-8407 or
413-268-8410 to register.
Williamsburg Historical Society Spring Meeting
Tuesday the 13th
of May.
Williamsburg Grange Hall
Potluck supper at 6:30. PM
Program at 7:30 - "His Own Proper Negro Slave" a talk by Erick
Weber, Williamsburg Historical Commission
In the autumn of 1766, Amos Newport filed a lawsuit against the
Hatfield gentleman who had held him in bondage for nearly forty
years, alleging false imprisonment. Amos asserted that he was a free
man and not a slave. Eric Weber will tell the fascinating, sadly
incomplete, and frequently puzzling story of Amos' courageous legal
battle and the subsequent events that linked his family's history to
Williamsburg, as well as to other places in the Pioneer Valley and
farther afield.

started by the Williamsburg Council On Aging about one year ago.
Members of the group range in age from 50 to 87. The group is,
however, open to adults of all ages. The group formed a little
over a year ago and group members decided to celebrate with a
reading of some of what they have written. The reading will be
held on Sunday, May 4th at 3 PM. It will be held at the Blue House
Cafe, 141 Main Street in Haydenville, MA. It is free of charge
although donations will be gratefully accepted. Members who will
be reading at this event include: Dorothy Backer, Sherri Boyle,
Carol Duke, Dusty Miller, Strong Oak, Rose Simmons, Ivonna Toones,
Noemi Valentin, Athena Warren, and Mary Wheelan. The writing group is part of
the Williamsburg Elder Arts Project, which is supported in part by
a grant from the Williamsburg Cultural Council, a local agency
which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state
agency. The Elder Arts Project also pays elder musicians to
perform at COA events.
